Dion Ebrahim saw enough of Muttiah Muralitharan’s bowling on the first day of the second Test between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Bulawayo on Friday to form a strong opinion about the controversial off-spinner.
Sri Lanka were 18 without loss at the close after dismissing Zimbabwe for 228, an innings held together by Ebrahim’s 70.
Asked if he saw any examples of Muralitharan’s ‘doosra’ delivery while he was batting, Ebrahim said: ‘‘I don’t think so, although he did bowl the top-spinner.’’
Ebrahim was, however, the recipient of a surprise orthodox leg-break from Muralitharan. ‘‘That was the first legal delivery he bowled, that’s my personal opinion,’’ the Zimbabwean said. Muralitharan ended the day with 2-58 off 22 overs to take his Test-career record tally to 523. Brief scores: Zimbabwe: 228 (D Ebrahim 70, S Matsikenyeri 45; C Vaas 3-41) vs Sri Lanka: 18-0
