First day, first show: Windies are a class act

It couldn’t have been any more thrilling. The first match of the 2003 World Cup was decided with just two balls left of a see-saw encounter that had both sides come agonisingly close to victory before the West Indies held their nerve to shock the hosts with a four-run victory.

Chasing 279 after Brian Lara’s imperious century and Ricardo Powell’s cameo 40, the match seemed to be slipping from South Africa’s grasp. Until Lance Klusener smashed 57 off 48.

But Carl Hooper kept his cool and caught Klusener in the last over, signalling the tournament’s first upset.
