Captain Saurav Ganguly today termed the reversion to fining teams for slow over-rate as ‘ridiculous’ after both India and Pakistan were fined for their slow over-rate in the first match of the one-day series at the National Stadium here today.

India posted a mammoth total of 349-7 in the first one-day international of the historic series against Pakistan only to see the hosts come dangerously close before falling short by five runs.

Pakistan conceded as many as 38 extras including 10 wides and 20 no balls, extending the Indian innings well beyond the stipulated play timings. A recent change in ICC match regulations allowed Pakistan to escape with a fine instead of being docked any overs from their innings.

“It is quite ridiculous. I find the rule very strange. Players don’t mind losing their money if they can win the match,” Ganguly said.

Madugalle’s decision to fine the teams was conveyed by Pakistan Cricket Board’s media manager Sami-ul Hasan. Although Hasan did not specify the quantum of the fine, it is learnt that the team will be docked 20 per cent of their match fees while the captain will be fined 30 per cent.
