The much-awaited press conference to introduce the newly-appointed coach Rajinder Singh (Jr) this afternoon failed to come off but the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was considerate enough to release the list of 35 probables for the Azlan Shah Cup tournament, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur between May 26 and June 5.
IHF cited some unavoidable reasons as the cause for the cancellation of the press conference with the promise to announce the fresh date shortly.
Though the federation has not officially announced the names of the coaches for the seven-nation event in Malaysia, all the new appointees are in place having taken charge of the camp at the National Stadium.
The camp was to begin yesterday, but with none of the players reporting it could not start. However, 15 of the 35 probables turned up to attend the camp this morning and by afternoon the number had swelled to 20.
Still the problem remained: coach Rajinder, obviously under instructions from IHF, was reluctant to talk to the media personel.
The list of probables released for the KL tourney finds Prabhjot Singh and Deepak Thakur coming back into reckoning.
The two were left out after the Athens Games like Gagan Ajit Singh. But the last named is currently serving a three-month ban and was not considered. The ban was slapped after he was involved in a brawl with another player during the recent Senior Nationals in Hyderabad.
Adrian D’Souza and penalty corner expert Sandeep Singh, though not figuring in the current list, are already attending the ongoing camp at Hyderabad for the junior World Cup. The camp for the Malaysian tourney continues till May 24.
