While the government seems to be fighting a losing battle against runaway expenditure, one person setting a laudable example is the country8217;s first citizen himself.

A look at the total expenses on the staff, household and allowances of the President tells us how. Data collected by the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy shows that since 1993-94, the expenses of the President have gone up steadily from Rs 4.36 crore to Rs 11.21 crore last year. This year, however, the expenses on the President have declined to a more modest Rs 8.04 crore.

Now, with such an exemplary example being set, surely some others should be persuaded to follow suit.
