With increasing delicensing of industries, the corporate world has less and less reason to approach the Government. Over the last few years several industries like automobiles have been delicensed. Now only nine industries remain under Government control.

Figures on licensing applications for setting up new manufacturing units show a decline. The number applications received and registered by the Industry Ministry dropped from 777 in 1995 to 531 in 1996. Similarly the pending applications also dropped from 1343 to 1319. Most of this decline can be attributed a reduced number of fresh applications. On the other hand, the number of industrial entrepreneur memoranda filed by the units in the delicensed industries has been rising.

From 3084 in 1991, it went up to 6502 in 1995. But it dropped to 4825 in 1996.
