November 23: Fr. Agnel, Vashi have won the team title in the Inter-Schools Bournvita Chess Tournament for the fifth time in a row. The first four years, the tournament had no seperate team championships for boys and girls. This year, with over 1,200 entries being received by the organisers, Kalina Recreation Centre, the tournament was split.The team title is decided by the performance of the top two players from a school in each age group. And the contributors for Agnel's cause were Vaibhav Saxena, Devendra Sathe, Ashwin Ganapathy, Aniruddha Unni, Ishan Nadkarni, Anuj Moralwar, Kashi Kishor Sah and Nadeem Abdulla.There was a tough fight for the runners-up in the boys section with Abhinav Vidyalaya, Dombivli, Manjunath Vidyalaya, Dombivli, Swami Vivenananda, Chembur, Gokuldham, Goregaon, last year's runners-up IES Chandrakant Patkar, Dombivli and St. Stanislaus being in the reckoning. The first-named school pipped the others.In the girls section, Fr. Agnel's had contributions from Rinkumari Yadav,Mrudula Nambiar, Anjurani yadav, Trichi Chawla, Saba Mhate, Abigail Fernandes and Shirin Fatima.The runners-up Travel network trophy for girls was won by Gokuldham which had the Variyar sisters, Mugdha and Purva, Purva Pathre, Monika Masketi and Aditi Jain, who incidentally was the second youngest participant tournament in the tournament.
