NEW DELHI, May 17: A retired Government official and his son were shot dead by four unidentified people at Rohini in West Delhi early this morning, sending shockwaves among the nearly 600,000 population of the area.
The victims — Prem Raj Garg (65) and his son Ajay — were killed after they tried to resist a robbery attempt by four people who had intruded into their house at about 3:40 am. Their wives, who tried to confront the intruders, were also shot at. They are battling for their lives in hospital.
The incident comes close on the heels of the murder of a 62-year-old woman in South Delhi last week. Police are still clueless about her murderer.
Police suspect that the assailants intruded into the house with the motive of robbery. But when the couple offered resistance, the robbers, who were armed with country-made revolvers, fired upon them. The assailants escaped without taking anything as other members of the family raised an alarm.
The house of the victims is in a row with other houses, allowing easy access to any person from adjacent houses. There is also no alarm system in case of emergencies. This makes the people living in such houses vulnerable to such incidents.
Giving details, police said Prem Raj and Ajay shared the same floor in the two-storeyed house, while the second floor was shared by his other two sons. The robbers gained entry into the house from the verandah. Prem Raj and his wife woke up after they heard some noise. They opened the door and after seeing the intruders raised an alarm. Ajay and his wife also woke up after the commotion. The intruders shot the four; Prem Raj and Ajay were hit in the chest and succumbed to their wounds.
