Obesity is a rather common problem nowadays and it8217;s no wonder that the race to health centers and slimming clubs is hotting up. Surveys have shown that 90 per cent of affluent urban Indians are overweight. And many of them are women who are too busy looking after home and hearth. Having no time for themselves.

As a result, they spend a lot of money on the gym, aerobic classes or even weight-reducing tablets. Crash diets do not help as lost weight is soon regained. It is better to reduce the weight slowly but steadily with regular exercise. After a month, a person feels lighter and more energetic. Excess weight not only causes strain to the heart, but also exerts pressure on the weight-bearing joints such as hips, knees and ankles and this ultimately shortens life. Moreover, over-weight, persons are generally susceptible to several diseases like coronary thrombosis, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, liver and gall bladder disorders.

There is no doubt that the requirement of calories per day depends on various factors such as age, built and the type of work one is engaged in, but on an average, a person requires 2,5000 calories a day at the age of 20, 2,000 at 358230;..The requirement decreases as the age increases.

Some easy guidelines for a slimmer you:

When you plan to reduce weight, promise yourself that you will be regular. You might put on a little weight initially but this is due to muscle-building. If you continue with your exercises regularly, there is sure to be a difference.

Exert control on your food intake. Say goodbye to oily, fried stuff and try nutritious food like soups, salads, sprouts and juices. Keep off sweets for at least for a month. After shedding a few pounds, the feeling is so good that you just won8217;t mind staying off sweets later. Don8217;t over-indulge when your favourite food appears on the table. Stop eating before you feel that you stomach is full. The maxim is 8220;fill one-third of your stomach with food, one-third with water and leave the rest empty.8221; Next comes exercise. Go slow in the beginning. Do only what your body can handle and gradually increase your workout time and stamina. If you are going to a gym, first try the walker and the stepper, cycle for a least 10 minutes or so. Start with the crunches or pull-ups and gradually these can be increased.

Eating a well-balanced diet, which contains the required amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals and fiber, is a part of any fitness program.
