Top National Conference leader and brother of former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, Mustafa Kamal, who is also a sitting MLA, visited the houses of two slain militant commanders on Wednesday to offer his condolences.
This is the first time that a senior NC leader has visited a slain militant’s home. The PDP started this trend during the 2002 elections, earning them goodwill in the separatist constituency.
One of the militants, Zahoor Ahmad Waza alias Zeeshan of Palhalan, Pattan, was the financial chief of the Hizbul Mujahideen. He was killed in an encounter on Monday, along with another local Hizbul commander Mohammad Yousuf Bhat alias Muneer. Police said Waza was on their “most wanted” militant list for several major attacks on police and security forces across north Kashmir.
Kamal said: “I went to console the families of the slain militants,” he said. “I went there in the capacity of being a Muslim. Besides I am the local legislator so there is nothing wrong in meeting the affected families.” Kamal also met the family whose house was damaged in the encounter and assured them that he would take up the issue of compensation with the Government.
