A 31-year-old pig farmer killed himself by drinking weed poison after losing bets of more than 90,000 ringgit (1.2 crore rupees) during the Euro 2008 football matches.

Chuang Toh Huat took the drastic step hours after the Spain vs Italy quarterfinal match on June 23.

Huat’s father said he had given his son more than a crore of rupees earlier to pay off his past debts.

“He promised he wouldn’t do it again,” his father was quoted by media reports as saying.

“Lately, with the Euro 2008 in full swing, he went back to his bad habit and we did not know about it,” his father said, adding that he had taken loans and sold pigs from his farm to pay off his son’s debts.
