MUMBAI, April 2: Mukesh Ambani, vice chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, identified agriculture and the information technology as the two sectors which would drive India’s economic growth in the years to come.

Delivering a lecture on `India 2020′ at the Indian Merchants Chambers (IMC) here on Thursday, Ambani said "India’s farm and information technology would steer the country to transform itself as an economic superpower by year 2020." Both these sectors, he said, can generate wealth with modest investment of technology. While agriculture can employ upto 120 million people, information technology can earn upto $ 20 billion in foreign exchange, he said.

"India’s vast potential of educated youth relate well to information technology who are capable of earning an average $ 20,000 per annum by working from India," he said.

By 2020, he expected 50 million Indians to earn $ one trillion per annum resulting in an astronomical demand for goods and services, thereby propelling India intothe big league.

“But this calls for a change in the mindset of each Indian who should pursue excellence. It also calls for a strong leadership in business as well as government,” he stated.

"It is time we define a clear role for the government which should continue to fulfil its role in developing a macro-economic regulatory framework that encourages competition," he said.
