MUMBAI, June 19: A Nepali gharwali was found dead in a brothel today. The six girls reportedly living with her were found missing.
The body of Kamala Babu Sumanji (55) was found in her two-room tenement in Arab building on Baburao Pathe Marg (Falkland Road) by her maid, Mala who arrived early in the morning. When the servant entered the unlocked door, Mala found Kamala lying on a bed with a noose around her neck. The fan and the tubelight in the room were also switched on. An old tin trunk was kept open and clothes were found strewn around. There was no sign of the six girls.
Scared Mala called Kamala’s nephew, Bikram Lama, who stayed four buildings away. Lama and Kamala’s friend Suresh Tamam reported the death to the V P Road police station. The police sent Kamala’s body was sent to the J J Hospital Marg for post mortem. Senior Inspector Suresh Jadhav said, “The findings definitely indicate death by hanging. There were no other injuries on her body. But it cannot be determined if it was suicide or murder until the post-mortem report is ready."
The police found a piece of the rope hanging from the ceiling fan. Lama and Taman dismissed suicide as the cause of death, “If Kamala had committed suicide, she would have collapsed on the floor while her body was stretched across on the bed which is a few feet away.” Taman also claimed that Kamala’s gold chain, ring and one of the ear-rings were missing. “I saw her wearing them last evening,” he says.
Kamala Sumanji’s neighbours say they saw Kamala’s girls when the building was `closed’ at 1.30 am. After that, they claim they neither heard nor saw anything.
According to Taman, Kamala had been living in the building for over 20 years. “However, the girls in Kamala’s custody were all Indians. All of them were in their 20s and had been with Kamala for 18 months or so.”
Kamala’s husband died a few years ago. Her son studies in a boarding school at Khandala. Her daughters live in Nepal. The elder daughter of Kamala Uspa (23) is married while the younger Pinki is 15-years-old. Uspa will be flying to Mumbai tomorrow.
