The CBI has seized machines used by Abdul Karim Telgi to print millions of fake stamps before he bought his own. In raids spread over two days, on the Prakash Mudranalay, St Mary’s Road, Mazgaon and Oriental Printers, Bellasis Road, the CBI laid its hands on the proof printing machine and the exposure machine used by Telgi.
In Bangalore, three police officials were arrested for damaging evidence against Telgi, a CBI spokesman said here.
The machines were seized after Uday Sawant, a former assistant of Telgi’s, cracked under investigations. Sawant said Prakash Mudranalay was taken on rent by Sunil Shelkar about 10 years ago. He ran a printing press under the name of Rachana Graphics. Shelkar worked for Sawant and knew the latter was working for Mudran press, owned by Telgi.
A Heidelberg machine, used to make proofs of the positive of revenue and insurance stamps, was seized from Oriental on Tuesday. Sawant would take the positives to Shelkar who would process them on the exposure machine and make plates of revenue and insurance stamps. The plates were used to make proofs from which stamps were printed.
In Bangalore, CBI sleuths arrested ACP (retired) T.G. Sangram Singh, inspector Vali Basha and sub-inspector Vazeer Ahmed Khan.
The agency alleged the officials had connived with Telgi and favoured him in the sale of fake stamp paper for bribe. The former ACP was bribed to let off Telgi’s brother, Abdul Raheem Telgi, though he was present along with the other five accused during the seizure of fake stamps which led to the registration of the case. And when a few aides of Telgi tried to run a parallel fake stamp business, the three officials registered a case against them.
