The arrest of alleged extortionist Nadeem Khan here on Sunday night hints at emergence of a new gang with foreign connections in the city, according to the Anti-extortion Cell. The cell is hunting other three gang members Taiyab Kidwai, Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Pathan.

Movement of Khan, arrested outside the Regal Cinema, where he went to collect Rs 80,000 from a film-maker, was being watched for over a month following information that he was making extortion calls on instructions of some foreign gangsters. Sources told The Indian Express that one of the two satellite phones used to make the calls was in Afghanistan.

“Khan operated from a guesthouse at Dongri, a Dawood stronghold, and made extortion calls to Mumbai-based film-maker Kartikey Gehlot, TV director and producer Anand Mahendru (he was shot at on January 18) and Surat-based businessman Salim Chakkiwala,” said Senior Police Inspector Prashant Boparai. Chakkiwala and Gehlot were told to pay Rs 10 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively, the police said further.

Notorious mafiosi could be involved, said a senior officer heading the investigation.
