A senior Additional Superintendent of Police, currently in-charge of the Special Branch in Guwahati City Police District, has been declared an absconder. Police issued a warrant in his name, following his involvement in a case of extortion in the state capital.

An Indian Oil Corporation officer has accused ASP Hare Krishna Medhi of having attempted to abduct him and then demanding Rs 2 lakh last month.

According to Guwahati City SP Hiren Nath, the refinery officer has filed an FIR with the Panbazar police, complaining that the additional SP had forcibly taken him away from the city, accused him of possessing contraband drugs, running a flesh trade racket, and then demanded Rs 2 lakh.

Medhi, according to the FIR, had also threatened to kill the refinery officer if he disclosed the matter to anyone else. When the officer assured that he would pay the sum on a given day, he was allowed to go. But the refinery officer approached the City SP, following which the police laid a trap and caught the additional SP red-handed.

But even before the police could initiate action against him, the Additional SP disappeared. While Medhi has remained untraceable for five days, the City Police have declared him an absconder and published advertisements, seeking information on his whereabouts.

‘‘We have conducted raids in various places, including his home town Namrup where his wife works as a school teacher, but have not been able to trace him,’’ said Nath. He said Medhi was due to be promoted to the rank of an SP in the next few weeks before the extortion case came up.
