Reporting for more than a decade from Kashmir, Muzamil Jaleel, Srinagar Bureau Chief of The Indian Express, said here on Tuesday he ‘‘feels lucky to be alive’’. Jaleel was speaking after receiving the Kurt Schork award in international journalism by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The other two awardees, Canada’s Patrick Graham and Poland’s Pawel Smolenski, were selected for their reporting from Iraq.
Constituted in May 2001 in memory of Kurt Schork—a US journalist killed while on assignment in Sierra Leone—the annual award is given for fearless news reporting.
Presenting the award, Sabina Cosic, chair, board of directors, Kurt Schork Memorial Fund, said Jaleel was selected for ‘‘covering…Kashmir, where he was vulnerable to death threats from both sides of the war-torn Himalayan community.’’
