VADODARA, July 21: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation has proposed appointment of consultants to construct a flyover, and widen bridges, underbridges and nullahs in the city.

Separate proposals are likely to be taken up at a meeting of the Standing Committee under the chairmanship of N V Patel on Thursday. While seeking in principle approval for appointment of a consultant, Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria has stressed the need to build a flyover near the Vadodara railway station and lay a 30-metre road between Dandia Bazaar and Akota.

Apart from increasing traffic, the reason for the alternative road is that the EME-Sama Road will be closed in 2000 A.D. (the Road belongs to the EME).

The civic chief has also stated that a consultant was necessary as the existing bridges — Kalaghoda, Commerce College, Vishwamitri-Munjmahuda, near Vishamitri Station, near Buddhdev Colony, Bahucharaji and Fatehganj-EME — were too small to cater to the present traffic. The need has been also felt to widen the Alkapuri, Jetalpur and Priyalaxmi Underbridges. The proposal states that the VMC should correspond with the Railway authorities and appoint a consultant who can suggested changes on the specifications of the Railways.

Widening of 15 nullahs is expected to cost nearly Rs 1.25 crore. In principle approval to appoint a consultant has been sought.
