Indian cricket team will ‘certainly’ have a bowling coach for the World Cup. But that will not be Fanie De Villiers. The former South African seamer has ‘opted’ out because the BCCI is looking for a ‘full-time’ appointee.

Talking to The Indian Express, Fanie said he had told the Indian coach John Wright about his decision and he was ‘sad’ about the same. ‘‘It is a pity that I cannot coach the Indians. I spoke to John (Wright) and he said Mr Dalmiya is looking for a person who can be full-time.’’ De Villers had always maintained that he will be available only a ‘short-term’ basis owing to his family and TV commitments.

Meanwhile another former South African fast bowler Craig Matthews, whose name was also floated as a possible choice has ‘denied’ reports of being approached.

‘‘I was surprised to read my name being thrown up. But I have not been approached by anyone till date,’’ affirmed Matthews. The former South African vice-captain now works as a marketing director with the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA). He though did say ‘if anyone spoke to him’, then he may be able to ‘think’. The BCCI on its part has given 15 days time for the appointment to be made. BCCI secretary SK Nair when contacted, said it is being decided by Board President through ‘another person’.

‘‘Dalmiya is keeping close watch on the matter and he is negotiating through a person. There are a few names in contention and we are negotiating. But there are a few problems in that.’’

When queried on the ‘nature’ of problems, Nair informed the salary for the job and the ‘time factor’ is becoming a bone of contention. ‘‘Some of them are asking for exorbitant salaries. Frankly they do not deserve that kind of money,’’ said Nair.
