Executive magistrates held captive in Assam relief camp

GUWAHATI, APRIL 7: Three executive magistrates, a police official and two photographers were forcibly kept confined by inmates of Jamunaguri Muslim relief camp in Kokrajhar district of Assam since Thursday, according to district Deputy Commissioner Johns Ingti Katchar today.

The six were, however, rescued last night, Katchar told PTI here.

As soon as the six arrived at the relief camp on Thursday the inmates gheraoed them demanding allotment of government land prior to taking their photos for providing them with identity cards as part of their rehabilitation.

The inmates did not allow them to leave the camp for nearly two days when they visited the camp to take their photos for I-card, Katchar said.

The three EMs are C Boro, K C Pegu and Jadav Pegu, he said, adding, security had been tightened around the relief camps and additional security forces deployed around the camp.

There are 2,074 minority community families in these camps alleged to be forest encroachers and are unwilling to be rehabilitated in different parts of the state, official sources said.
