A former Congress minister from Manipur was arrested here for allegedly molesting a woman party cadre at her residence, police said.

Viren Singh, a two-term MLA, was later released on bail.

Singh was arrested on Saturday after a woman party colleague, who hosted a dinner for him, registered a case in Mehrauli police station levelling molestation charges against the 46-year-old politician, they said.

Singh, who had served as a minister of public works department (PWD) in the northeastern state, was arrested while he was preparing to go to Delhi’s domestic airport to board a flight to Imphal, they said.

The 33-year-old woman, claiming to be a Youth Congress leader from Arunachal Pradesh, in her written complaint alleged that the former minister was heavily drunk and tried to outrage her modesty at her Chattarpur residence in South Delhi on the night of March 14-15, police said.

Singh pushed her and fled from the scene after she raised an alarm, she alleged.

“We got the information at around 4 am on Saturday,” a police officer added.

Singh was later released after an MLA from Manipur completed the bail formalities and paid a personal bond, they said, adding the ex-minister then left for his home state.

The investigation in the case is on, they added.
