SURAT, Nov 15: Former Supreme Court judge Justice D A Desai was elected chairman of Sarvajanik Education Society, the largest organisation in Gujarat having stakes in institutions imparting education from pre-primary to professional level courses, at its 85th annual general meeting held on Sunday.
Vaikunthbhai Shastri and Dr Ramanbhai I Patel were elected vice-chairmen for the year 1998-99. The five new members elected on the managing committee are: Dr Girish Kazi, Dr Sunil Modi, Dr Dilipkumar Marfatia, Dr Kirit Dumasia and Dr Rajnikant Chevli. Dr Chhotubhai Desai, Prof Hukumatrai Desai and Dr Dhirubhai Desai were elected retired volunteers.
About 30,575 students are studying in eight colleges, one research centre, nine secondary/higher secondary schools, nine primary schools among others. About 13,500 students are taking computer education in these institutions.
President of managing and executive committee Dr Girishkumar Kazi said the society had received permission from the statutory bodies of South Gujarat University to start an MBA college. A two-member committee of the All India Council for Technical Education visited Surat in August and submitted its report.
The Society has followed all requirements laid down by AICTE and has despatched additional information sought by it. However, sanction for the project was getting delayed due to one reason or the other. The Society has received donation of Rs 53 lakh from Luthra Charitable Trust for starting the MBA course and Rs 30 lakh from Pratibha Silk Mills for a BBA college.
He further informed that AICTE had given permission for doubling the number of students only in the computer engineering course. The Society had sought permission to double the existing number of seats in electrical engineering, computer engineering and instrumentation engineering streams also.
