NAGPUR, AUGUST 27: The early years of the 20th century saw a lot of innocent people getting killed on public roads by motor sport enthusiasts. Motor racing, therefore, shifted to off-road events in agricultural fields, especially in Britain, France and Germany.

Thus, evolved two different types of competitors, one lot who was purely interested in speed and the other lot who wanted to prove their driving skills and their machines performance over the rough terrain.

Cars and drivers, who race on the circuits are professionals who probably know more about aerodynamics and speed than a aircraft pilot. Other motor sport enthusiast rallied together to get into a different type of competitive activity and decided to hold off-road events to test their driving skills and their machine’s capabilities, which gradually evolved into disciplined rallying — not racing against each other but against time between two set distance points. The Great Himalayan Motor Race will also be a test of a man’s skills behind the wheels and his machine.

Nazir Chagla, the chief steward for the race, told The Indian Express that the safety aspect has been given a top priority in the Himalayan Race. What then? Unrefutabl’y, man’s penchant for speed, thrills and spills will always grow, and if ever towmorow there is a motorable road to the Miunt Everest, man and machine are going to get there.
