RAJKOT, JAN 24: Kaun Banega Crorepati? Dhiru Banega Crorepati, Chaman Banega Crorepati… Before you begin thinking you’ve missed a crucial episode of KBC, Dhiru and Chaman are actually popular characters in Gujarati spoofs of the game show and available on audio cassettes.

The cassettes have become an instant hit not only because they draw parallels with KBC, but also because they reflect the earthy humour and spirit of Saurashtrians and that too in the Kathiawadi dialect. The question-answer format of the KBC is used to poke fun at various facets of social and political life and personalities, right from the Big B himself to local politicians.

Ketan Ganatra of Ambika Electronics says they have sold over 4,000 such cassettes in the last few months and demand continues to remain high. He said four such cassettes have been released, including Dhiru Banega Crorepati, Chaman Banega Crorepati, Crorepati Banega Kanyapati, Crorepati Banega Hasyapati. ‘‘These cassettes have broken all the past sales records of humour cassettes in Gujarati, including those of popular artiste Shahbuddin Rathod,’’ he said.

Kaushik Kanani, who has bought the cassettes, says it’s fun listening to them, especially since the entire family can enjoy it. Dhiru Banega Crorepati features artiste duo Vasant and Paresh from Jamnagar and is in both Kathiawadi and Hindi. In the spoof, Dhiru troubles the Big B during the entire show. The artistes comment on politics, movies, the Big B himself and also the culture and society of Saurashtra and Gujarat.

Kaushal Parmar says he liked the character of Dhiru, who is portrayed as intelligent, but has to use a lifeline when asked his grandfather’s name. Nevertheless, he takes home Rs 1 crore in the end.

The character of Dhiru’s father Bhokalal is also interesting and generates a lot of laughs. Bhokalal gatecrashes into the show after being denied permission by the organisers. Paresh Gohel says Bhokalal represents the typical, unputdownable, rustic Saurashtrian.

Listeners also enjoy when Dhiru says Amdavadis don’t like bananas because the skin has to be thrown and they don’t like to throw anything for which they have paid.

And when Dhiru tells Amitabh that there is no need to lock his answer ABCL because it is already locked has listeners in splits. In the end Dhiru wins Rs 1 crore, but gives it away to the Big B, saying his need is greater.

In Chaman Banega Crorepati, Chaman takes potshots at politicians in a lighthearted vein. Even the recent match-fixing controversy features in the cassette.

However, after 45 minutes of laughter and jokes, artiste Prashant Dave ends it realistically. To the question who killed Mahatma Gandhi, Chaman replies Nathuram Godse shot at his body, but present-day politicians have killed his values. Chaman remains firm in his reply despite the Big B’s warnings that he might lose his prize money.

Amitabh finally punches the reply into the computer, and it is accepted. Chaman Jiva, the simpleton from Gondal, ultimately walks away the winner with Rs 1 crore.
