Jaipur: At least 20 people were injured in a pitched battle between anti-reservationists and policemen during a massive demonstration when the former forcibly attempted to enter the information centre to submit a memorandum to the Rajasthan Governor addressing a function there, the police said. Protestors also burnt tyres and damaged the official car of the Jaipur Divisional Commissioner as they were denied permission for memorandum submission, police said.

IIT boycotts classes

Kanpur: Protests against the quota for OBCs in higher education intensified on Thursday as students of the Indian Institute of Technology did not attend classes and students of GSVM Medical College began a hunger strike. A 24-hour hunger strike by IIT-Kanpur students ended on Thursday morning.

Doctors lathicharged

Kolkata: Several junior doctors were injured on Thursday when police lathicharged anti-quota agitationists who blocked the arterial Chittaranjan Avenue and Bowbazar Street near Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. After assembling at the state-run medical college and hospital the medicos went in a procession, with placards protesting the Centre’s decision to introduce reservation in government-aided educational institutions and set up a road block at the Chittaranjan Avenue. Police resorted to lathicharge after they failed to persuade the protesters to disperse, an eye-witness said.

5 arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai: Four resident doctors and Maratha Mahasangh president Sunil Pawar were arrested while participating in anti-quota protests at Matunga here, police said on Thursday. Pawar and about 22 doctors were protesting opposite Aarora Cinema in Matunga on Wednesday and they were arrested as the demonstration violated prohibitory orders, police said.
