MUMBAI, MARCH 5: Little men, mighty deeds. Two players - one from St Stanislaus and the other from Don Bosco - fit the bill after two exciting Thums-Up sponsored Inter-schools hockey finals at Bandra today.Erlin Saldanha will long remember a hat-trick that brought Don Bosco (Matunga) the Oliver Anrade Trophy for under-10s with a 3-1 win over hosts St Stanislaus.Later, in the under-12 final, Shane Vanshipley scored two spectacular goals as the hosts overcame St Anne's (Orlem) 3-0 to claim the Walter D'Souza Cup.Schoolboy exuberance and an atmosphere to match made for exciting hockey as the youngsters seemed oblivious of defence-oriented play.Coach, international B S Kutappa, had every right to be proud as Don Bosco undid St Stanislaus' claim for a double. But the lively pace and skills, along with raw enthusiasm and spirit, gladdened the hearts of both winners and losers - not least that of chief guest, Olympian Gavin Ferreira.Ferreira, an ex-student of losing finalists St Anne's (Orlem), summedit up in his tribute: "The boys showed fine game sense and skills."After Clifford Remedious missed two open chances, Vanshipley put St Stanislaus ahead with an opportunistic goal from Delon Misquitta's cross in the 16th minute of the 40-minute match. The goal punished a faltering St Anne's who had till then forced four penalty corners (six in the match).St Anne's had chances from open play as well and forward Dylan Sequeira once again failed to score from close range in the early moments of the second half.Vanshipley, ever threatening, went close twice more but it was Tyrell Valadares who scored to put St Stanislaus 2-0 ahead in the 29th minute - a nice lunging effort to beat goalkeeper Scott Bent off a defence splitting diagonal from Player-of-the-final Rohan Thomas.St Stanislaus wrapped it up with Vanshipley's second, a waist-high slash from another Thomas cross, a minute from time.Saldanha, mobbed and chaired by his team, parents and supporters was just too excited to express what he feltabout the feat. He struck in the 21st, 24th and 32nd minutes to seal the issue for the Matunga school.Craig Pereira's goal was a consolation for St Stanislaus who were not exactly outplayed as the score-line suggests.Saldanha scored his first amid a melee, then added another after the Bosco lads showed a piece of shrewdness. A quickly-taken free-hit by player-of-the-final Joshua Mead at the top of the circle had Saldanha slotting home in a flash.Saldanha completed his hat-trick with an angular shot from Nikhil Manale's pass to put Bosco 3-0 up.SPECIAL PRIZES AND OTHER RESULTSSpecial prizes: under-10: Outstanding players: Craig Pereira (St Stanislaus); Zubin Shah (St Joseph's, Malad).
