India today summoned Bangladesh’s acting High Commissioner to convey its ‘‘concerns’’ following reports of armed security guards misbehaving with the wife of an Indian diplomat in Dhaka. Rupa Chakravarti, wife of Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Bangladesh S. Chakravarti, was harassed by a group of armed individuals who surrounded her car while she was making her way back home on Thursday afternoon. They were apparently the personal security staff of Bangladeshi businessman Shah Alam, chairman of the Basundhara Group. Alam’s car was in front of the car in which Chakravarti was travelling. The guards soon emerged from Alam’s car and misbehaved with Chakravarti’s driver. The incident occurred in front of the city’s Apollo Hospital where the car was held up by these men for about an hour. Chakravarti apparently rushed out of the car and took shelter in a nearby school. Her driver Vinod Kumar was manhandled; he has filed a complaint with the police for alleged misbehaviour by Alam and his associates. One of Alam’s bodyguards is said to have been arrested by the Dhaka police on the basis of the driver’s complaint. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh has also taken up the matter with the Bangladesh foreign ministry in Dhaka through a note verbale. Dhaka has assured necessary action in the matter. In Delhi, however, Bangladesh’s acting High Commissioner Masud bin Momen was called to South Block and India’s concerns were conveyed to him.
