The first Black archbishop in the history of the Church of England, Ugandan-born John Sentamu, formally took up his post at a ceremony in London on Wednesday.

Sentamu is a popular, socially liberal figure and a leading activist on racism, who led Church opposition to the Iraq war. He was named in June to take over as 97th Archbishop of York, the Church’s second-most important position.

In an interview with The Guardian, Sentamu said he would be happy to ordain women bishops if the Church of England allowed it. He condemned the way members of the Anglican communion speak of gay men and lesbians.

‘‘Some of our disagreements are not Christian. It seems to suggest that all the evils of the world are being perpetrated by gay and lesbian people, which I cannot believe to be the case,’’ he said. —AFP/PTI
