Encephalitis has struck Uttar Pradesh again and has so far claimed 27 lives, mostly children.

With the death of two more children in BRD Medical College Hospital, Gorakhpur, on Monday, the toll in that hospital alone has reached 21. Six more children are critical. Two people have died in Gonda, Maharajganj and Badaun districts.

Encephalitis has spread in the rural areas of Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Deoria. Chief Medical Officer of Maharajganj said more than 24 are suffering from the disease.

But the deaths did not find a mention at a meeting called last week by Health Minister Aridaman Singh. The state has not placed orders for vaccines with Central Research Institute. Last year, the disease claimed 200 lives in the state.
