AURANGABAD, AUG 10: A 45-year-old elephant has died of suspected kidney ailment at the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation-managed Siddharath Zoo garden here on Tuesday.
While blood samples of the elephant analysed at a private pathological lab here revealed that it was suffering from kidney problems, a team of vets from the Agriculture University, Parbhani, had ruled out such a possibility. On the team’s recommendation, the elephant was administered about 100 litres of antibiotics and about 12 litres of glucose, officials at the zoo said.
The elephant appeared to be responding to the treatment initially, but with a few hours it just “collapsed” like a huge wall, its attendants said.
Officials said the elephant, which was brought from the Rajiv Gandhi National Park on August 15, 1997, showed no symptoms of illness until a few days ago, when it stopped taking any food. Thereafter, its health began to steadily deteriorate and experts had to be rushed in. Children used to go on rides on the elephant when it was at the zoo park — one of the most popular visits for children.
Two years ago, a couple of white tigers brought from Mandankanan had also died at the zoo mysteriously and the cause of their death was also recorded as "kidney ailment".
