The rising hire and fire trend, contract hirings and alleged moves to marginalise trade unions in the name of corportisation of the country came under sharp attack in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Cutting across party lines, members said employees in thousands were being eased out or made to work on tailor made contracts completely loaded in favour of managements.
The members who included prominent Left front MPs and trade union leaders asked the government to open a dialogue with the major trade unions to work out nationally acceptable safeguards for contract workers.
Initiating the discussion in the House, D Raja of the CPI wanted the government to bring in a comprehensive legislation on recognition of trade unions.
“India is rushing to catch up with globalization by easing laws for private entrepreneurs. But there has been no move to amend labour laws to safeguard the rights of the employees,” Raja said.
“Vagaries, whims and fancies are ruling the roost in the name of privitisation, globalisation and modernisation,” he said.
Raja drew support from G Sanjeeva Reddy of the Congress who said that during the past 60 years, Government had failed to enact a concrete policy on recognition of trade unions.
Reddy, who is also the President of the INTUC, wanted Government to implement the recommendations made by the National Labour Commission.
