Members of Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, cutting across party lines, called for making judiciary more accountable and transparent in the wake of some recent allegations of corruption. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, JD-U leader Sharad Yadav said the credibility of the courts has got eroded because of some investigative reports in the media and called for corrective measures. Though Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan barred him from taking names, Yadav continued to cite examples. “Judiciary insists that it would select itself and govern itself. But its eroding credibility will adversely affect democracy itself,” Yadav said. Yadav was supported by other members who too said judiciary should be made accountable. Shatrughan Sinha (BJP) said judges should be asked to declare their assets just as politicians and bureaucrats are made to do. “What is right for Peter is right for Paul,” he said. In another Zero Hour mention, D Raja (CPI) said experienced doctors should be posted in rural areas and they should be given more comfort and better salary to retain talents. On proposals to extend the MBBS course to ensure mandatory posting in rural areas, he said it would lead to apprehensions among students as the course would get extended.Ali Anwar (JD-U) raised the incident of a weaver woman selling away her child in Varanasi, describing it as a “shame on the entire country.”
