PATIALA, July 8: Eight societies working for the welfare of the handicapped in Punjab were today given state awards at a Bal Chetna function organised by the Department of Women and Child Development in Nabha. The awards were presented by Minister of Public Health Raja Narinder Singh. He also presented grants of Rs 1 lakh each to these societies.

Addressing the function, Raja Narinder Singh exhorted women to come forward to provide a helping hand to the anganwadi centres in the state. He said the voluntary organisations must come forward to provide a helping hand to the government for the welfare of women and children.

The Minister also released passbooks for women jagriti centres of Sahouli and Bhadson. He also distributed Rs 500 each among 15 girls under the girl child scheme.

R.L. Kalsia, director, Social Security and Women and Child Welfare Department, claimed that the pensions provided by the department got a jump during the past two years from 2.24 lakh to 6.1 lakh beneficiaries and till this month, the government had released Rs 43 crore for pensions. Regarding anganwadis, he said about 3.65 lakh children were being imparted education in the anganwadis. On this occasion, the youth wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal organised a blood donation camp for soldiers injured in the Kargil conflict and 50 volunteers donated blood.
