Even as the Manipur government has launched a massive effort to secure the release of the German, held captive by the underground Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) for the sixth day, the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), an umbrella body of three other underground groups today sent out appeals for the foreigner’s release ‘‘in the greater interest of Manipur’’.

Meanwhile, a senior diplomat from the German embassy in New Delhi, who flew in to Imphal yesterday, met the State Chief Secretary and police DG and pressed for securing the release of Heinrich Wolfgang.

The MPLF comprising the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), People’s Liberation Army and United National Liberation Front today issued a joint statement in Imphal appealing to the KLA to free Wolfgang ‘‘in the greater interest of Manipur.’’

The United NGOs Mission, Manipur, who had invited Wolfgang is also negotiating with the KLA to secure his release. Sources said a communication channel opened with the rebel group was functioning ‘‘well’’ and he might he released any moment.

Police are also hopeful of his release in a day or two. Sources in the state police claimed Wolfgang was safe and alive. The KLA is an underground group consisting of members of the Kuki tribe. The PLA, Prepak and UNLF on the other hand represent the Meiteis.
