In what is being seen as a deliberate attempt to intimidate members of the city’s ethnic minorities, racists have allegedly targeted cars of over a dozen Sikhs and Muslims in Edinburgh, Scotland, police said today. Tyres have been slashed on at least 13 cars in recent days, police said adding one incident on Monday, involving several cars, took place in the private grounds of a gurdwara in Mill Lane.

Members of the Sikh and Muslim communities in Leith fear that it could escalate into something far more serious .

“It is unlikely they were random acts as all the vehicles belong to either Sikhs or Muslims,” said Chief Inspector of Lothian and Borders police.

Councillor Shami Khan, who is on the police board, said similar incidents happened in December 2004, when around 50 events of racially-motivated vandalism were seen.

All attacks took place between December 30 and January 3 in different streets all across Leith. —PTI
