EC teams in Assam to verify electoral rolls

Three teams of Election Commission officials were sent to Assam today to make field verifications of revisions in electoral rolls. The teams will visit districts in the state going to the polls next year. Sources said this decision was taken following complaints over electoral rolls.

The EC has ordered a special summary revision of electoral rolls with January 1, 2006 as the qualifying date in Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Orissa, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi, Lakshwadweep and Pondicherry. While draft rolls would be published on October 20, the date for final rolls is January 24, sources said.

EC also ordered intensive revision of electoral rolls with January 1, 2006 as the qualifying date in Goa, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Final rolls are to be published on April 24, 2006.
