The Election Commission today slammed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s reported pre-poll promises made at Sattankulam constituency as a brazen violation of the model code of conduct.
The EC picked up leads to Jayalalithaa’s speeches from the media, print and electronic, and asked the state government for an official response.
In a letter addressed to the state Chief Secretary, the Commission has said: ‘‘The reported election campaign of Jayalalithaa is causing concern.’’ According to media reports, the CM had promised to set up a women’s college, sports complex, polytechnic and a cement plant in the constituency. But the state government today said Jayalalithaa had made no ‘‘specific promises’’.
Meanwhile, the EC today ordered postponing of bypolls at Poraiyahat Assembly constituency in Jharkhand from February 26 to March 24. The polls were put off in view of the strike by the State Police and Home Guards.
