CHANDIGARH, June 12: The State Election Commission, Punjab has directed the authorities to register a case against two returning officers in Amritsar district for dereliction of duty.
According to an official spokesman, on the basis of a report sent by district electoral officer-cum-additional deputy commissioner (Development) Amritsar, two officers Didar Singh, BDO and Paramjit Singh BDO posted at Ajnala and Chogawan respectively, had vitiated the election process as both of them failed to report details of the nomination papers rejected by them.
The report was to be sent by June 10. This raised questions about their propriety in rejecting the papers of various candidates, as they did not contact the commission on phone, fax or on wireless.
The commission has directed the authorities to register a section under Section 120 of the Punjab State Election Commission Act, 1994.
