With the election process over, the three-member Election Commission today notified the constitution of the 14th Lok Sabha made up of 543 elected representatives in all.

Chief Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthy along with the two Commissioners B.B. Tandon and N. Gopalaswami went to Rashtrapati Bhavan to submit the list. While elections were countermanded in Chhapra in Bihar, where fresh polling is scheduled for May 31, the results for the Lok Sabha seats of Bettiah, Siwan and outer Manipur are yet to be announced because of repolling.

The EC put the final voting percentage across the country at 57.86 per cent. and pointed out that women had only eight per cent representation. The CEC said it had suggested to the government to ensure adequate representation to women in legislatures. Commenting on the issue of criminalisation of politics, Krishnamurthy said, ‘‘There was a need to keep away persons who have been charge-sheeted for offences punishable with five years or more of imprisonment. The Commission hopes that the government will take electoral reforms as priority number one.’’

He said poll-panel would make all efforts to rectify mistakes in the electoral rolls by using modern technology.
