The internal party election in the Samata Party to elect office-bearers, from national party president to district block officers, seems doomed from the outset. The election process is caught in the tussle between the two factions, led by Defence Minister George Fernandes and Railway Minister Nitish Kumar.

The latest is the salvo fired by the EC, which has been dragged in, ever since the ‘‘unauthorised and unconstitutional suspension’’ (as the Fernandes camp calls it) of the Bihar State Party committee.

The Bihar committee was summarily dissolved by a section of the parliamentary party committee after a series of public confrontations and feuds between the two factions. A convenor, Vashishth Narain Singh, was appointed by the Kumar faction, to supervise the electoral process.

However, P.K. Singh, leader of the Legislative Council, rushed to the EC on February, challenging the dismissal of the committee. The EC requested both warring parties to appear on March 20, 2003. However, the party has not responded to the notice.
