CALCUTTA, June 6: East Bengal started their football season today on a more positive note than their famed rivals Mohun Bagan.
In their first match of the McDowell Cup football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here, East Bengal defeated qualifiers Railway FC 4-0.
The first goal in the 16th minute was a penalty conversion after Vijayan was brought down inside the box by Railway defender Pijush Nandy.
The striker converted the spot-kick.
The second goal came in the last minute of the first half with Renedy Singh creating the opening from the left flank.
The Manipuri tapped the ball into Vijayan’s path, who just ran a couple of yards before placing the ball between Railway goalkeeper S Moitra and the near post.
Dipendu Biswas, who switched over from Mohun Bagan, replaced Vijayan in the second half and grasped his chance with a 60th minute goal to make it 3-0.A Tushar Rakshit through was meant for both Biswas and Bhutia. The former got to it first and side-stepped the goalkeeper to score.
