LONDON, DECEMBER 23: Eating cheese with a meal can help fight tooth decay, British dentists have said.

Eating meals which contain cheese significantly increases the amount of calcium found in the plaque that coats teeth, thus protecting teeth against decay, according to research published in the British Dental Journal on Wednesday.

Teeth are protected whether the cheese is eaten cooked or uncooked. Pasta and chicken meals which contain cheese increase the amount of calcium found in plaque and this encourages a hardening of the tooth surface and discourages tooth decay.

“Calcium helps teeth to resist decay and erosion,” said Dr Geoff Craig of the BDA’s health and science policy group. “This research suggests that calcium in cheese is helpful even if the cheese is cooked.”
