MUMBAI, MAY 29: Chembur English scored a comfortable 3-1 victory over Saki Village Boys in the first-round of the MDFA-conducted Air-India Trophy football tournament at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, today.

The first-half was played on a fast note by both teams. But fortune smiled on Chembur English who capitalised on a defensive lapse in the very second minute. A long lob by Aloysious Vaz saw Saki Village Boys goalkeeper Johnson D’Souza misjudge the ball which entered the goal after lobbing in front of the ‘keeper.

Saki Village restored parity after seven minutes through Roshan D’Costa. But Chembur English once again wrested the lead just before half-time through Agnelo Fernandes. Agnelo then scored his second goal in the dying minute.Earlier in the Guru Nanak Trophy, St Paul’s beat Kalina Striker Boys 5-4 via the tie-breaker after the two were locked 1-1 after full-time.

Francis Alvares gave St Paul’s the lead and Vinod Rawat equalised for the Kalina side. In the tie-breaker, Rudolph D’Cunha, AnthonyFernandes, Dolrich Alvares and Francis Alvares netted for the winners and Kamlesh Takalikar, Chetan Chauhan and Raj Singh accounted for the losers.

Varun enters final

Varun Dattani beat Karan Arora 15-8, 15-17, 15-9, 15-13 to enter the final of the SRAM’s Coaching Camp squash tournament at the CCI today.

Under-19: Rohan Gracias bt Vikash Maskara 15-5, 15-5, 15-8.

Girls: Natasha Lal bt Anaheeta Dhalla 15-17, 15-5, 15-10, 15-8.

Lourdes prevail

Lourdes XI, Kalyan, defeated Fr Agnel Gymkhana 3-2 in the semi-final of the Thane District hockey tournament at the Central Police ground, Thane, today.Sadanand Kahar, Vivek D’Souza and T Stanley scored for Lourdes. Cyril Bernard and Amin Yusuf netted for Fr Agnel.

In the other semi-final, Vasai Eskimos beat Independent (Vashi) 1-0. Mahesh Lokhande netted the winner.
