JOHANNESBURG, Dec 4: Having agreed on an out-of-court settlement, Earl Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, and his wife Victoria were divorced yesterday in Cape Town. South African radio reported that under the settlement, which was not officially detailed by either side, the Countess would receive 1.8 million pounds (around 3.3 million dollars).
The 32-year-old Countess, former Vogue model Victoria Lockwood, can also keep the house in which she lives in Cape Town, plus a luxury car, the radio said.
Press reports during initial court hearings involving the couple in South Africa had speculated that the Countess had demanded twice as much from the 33-year-old Earl, whose fortune is estimated at 100 million pounds.
The couple, who married in September 1989 and had four children, now live in separate houses a few streets from each other in Cape Town’s up-market Constantia suburb. They moved there from Britain last year to escape what the Earl, who himself once worked as a journalist for a US television channel, described as severe harassment by the tabloid press.
