October 22: The 15-year-long effort of the veteran actor Sunil Dutt is finally set to bear fruit with a new mobile cancer hospital dedicated to the poor and needy.
Dutt, who himself has felt the pangs of his wife succumbing to the dreaded disease, said the project entails establishing a well-equipped mobile hospital in Mumbai which will be the first of its kind in India. It will be custom-built by the German firm Siemens, at a total cost of $250,000.
Mounted on a truck chasis, the mobile hospital will be equipped with X-Ray machines and various cancer diagnosis machines in addition to the regular facilities and medical equipment for treating minor ailments.
The project is funded by NRIs in America, Canada and Europe through the Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation for the welfare of poor in India.
Dutt will soon place the order with Seimens in Mumbai for the mobile hospital which will take a year to be built and become operational.
Transporting the equipment into India will take some time, Dutt said adding that he was yet to decide on which hospital would be entrusted with managing the mobile hospital.
The novel mobile hospital will provide free check-ups and medication.
Doctors will also be able to perform minor surgeries in this hospital which will initially operate on week-ends, Dutt added.
