CALCUTTA, NOV 6: Sarah Fergusson, the estranged wife of Britain’s Prince Andrew and Dutchess of York, arrived in Calcutta this morning on a three-day trip to have a first-hand knowledge of the plight of children hit by this year’s devastating floods in Bengal.

Sarah’s visit was kept a closely-guarded secret and even the British High Commission in Calcutta is tight-lipped about her schedule. An official of the High Commission when contacted said: “We confirm that she is in town. But she is on a private visit to Calcutta and we are not keeping track.”

However, it could be gathered that Sarah visited the Missionaries of Charity headquarters — The Mother House on APC Road — and talked to the Sisters. According to information gathered, Sarah would visit De Ganga in North 24-Parganas and some other areas of Nadia district in the next couple of days.

Future Hope, an international non-governmental organisation working on children was said to be looking after her programme in Calcutta, particularly those related to her charity for children. The Dutchess is said to have been deeply moved by reports about the plight of children affected by floods and has reportedly pledged that she would raise funds for their welfare.
