FEBRUARY 22: A Mumbai police officer and his brother have set out to create a new world record in smimming. They intend to cover a distance of 72 nautical miles from the Gateway of India to Dharamtar and back.

“We actually started preparing for the event on January 23 by swimming continuously for two hours. Over the last 30 days our performance has improved. We can now swim 15 hours at a stretch. Last Monday we swam a marathon 15 hours in a swimming pool,”said Balasaheb.

Balasaheb, 41, claims to have swam across the English Channel on November 9 last year. He also swam from Dharamtar to Gateway of India.

Ganesh, who is 42 years old, said that the two would have to sustain themselves on liquids during the 16 hour swim. A lot would also depended on the wind conditions, as they could whip up high waves, added Ganesh.

“The sea water is heavier when compared to the swimming pool water. And the waves take a heavy toll on the swimmers,”said Balasaheb.
