Claims that former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur is involved in misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 8 crore is bound to raise eyebrows. But that is exactly what the Cricket Club of India (CCI) has accused him of. The 74-year-old has also been banned from representing the prestigious club at any BCCI meeting.

The CCI has alleged that Dungarpur had been involved in fund-mismanagement while setting up floodlights at the Brabourne Stadium for the Champions Trophy last year. Dungarpur has, however, denied the charges, saying: “I just need a little time to clear my name in this.”

After heading the CCI for 12 years, Dungarpur decided to relinquish his post a couple of months ago, and agreed on a a specific clause which stated that he would continue to represent the club at BCCI meetings. And this is why Dungarpur attended the last BCCI AGM held here in August. But now, club management has barred him from doing so until an inquiry is completed.

New CCI president, I M Kadri, has reportedly asked an audit company, KPMG, to probe the matter.

Apparently, Kadri had informed Dungarpur about the case last month while the CCI chief executive officer R N Renjen sent the veteran administrator a letter asking him not to attend any meeting on behalf of the club.

The BCCI, meanwhile, has washed its hands off the issue, with secretary Niranjan Shah saying that “this is CCI’s internal matter.”

Earlier, Dungarpur had also been linked to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) when he had taken a softer stand on Zee’s latest venture. This had also given way to rumours that he had agreed to provide the CCI’s Brabourne Stadium for ICL matches scheduled to begin later this year.

“I never made any statement in this regard. I don’t know where the rumours have come from,” he said.

Dungarpur also confirmed that he had received a letter from CCI, which lists the charges and bars him from attending BCCI meetings.

The former BCCI chief has, however, asked for time to come out with his version of the story.

He added though that the CCI had not faced any problems while installing the floodlights prior to the Champions Trophy and expressed surprise about the allegations. “There was no problem with the accounts, it was all clear,” Dungarpur said.
