NEW DELHI, December 24: Delhi University defeated Maharishi Dayanand University (Rohtak) 23-16 to take the third place in the men’s section of all-India inter-university handball championships which concluded at Kurukshetra University, according to reports reaching here.

Hosts Kurukshetra claimed both the men’s and women’s titles.

In the men’s final, Kurukshetra beat Punjab University, Chandigarh by a 21-19 margin while in the women’s final, Kurukshetra defeated Calicut 15-14, pushing the national women players to No. 2 position. Panjabi (Patiala) got the third position after beating Nagpur by a 20-15 margin.

Tension arose in the middle of the men’s final match when team members of Punjab University walked out in protest against a decision of the referee. The team members raised slogns against the referee even as there were pro-referee slogans from the pavilion later. The situation was difused when some sports officers pacified the angry players. The match had to be restarted.
