PATIALA, Feb 7: A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) fired indiscriminately in the air around midnight on Friday outside a wedding pandal in the Tripuri township, a peripheral colony of the city.
Inquiries made by ENS revealed that Constable Bawa Singh of the 121st Battalion based at Hallomajra, was to be the night guard on duty from 1 a.m. last night. But he went to attend a wedding party in Bhakra Colony and got drunk there. There were a total of 20 rounds in his rifle, of which he fired nine shots in the air under the influence of liquor.
According to unconfirmed reports, window panes of some vehicles parked in the locality were smashed due to the firing which caused panic in the area.
According to police sources, a Central Reserve Police Force police party is staying near the Baba Farid Computer Centre on the road leading to Tripuri and Bawa Singh was staying with this party.
On a complaint sent by the company commander of the Central Reserve Police Force the district police have registered a case under section 336 India Penal Code and started investigations. Two empties of the shots fired from the service rifle have been recovered from the area while the police are searching for the others.
The constable was got medically examined last night and the report confirmed that he was smelling of liquor.
According to sources, some Central Rerserve Police Force personnel of the 121 Battalion have been staying in a government rest house adjoining the Baba Farid Computer centre. Some of the CRPF jawans have been deployed on security duty at Nabha, a subdivision town of the district.
